Object number2009.31.8 AB
A portable checkerboard manufactured for the U.S. Navy; most likely belonged to Alfred Bryan. Board folds into four squares, and has a navy blue cover embossed with a gold anchor and the letters "USN." When opened once, a black interior (embossed in gold with the text "CHECK R PAK/Manufactured by MEVI") becomes visible. Two tabs at the bottom edge serve as drawer pulls, where nine wooden black checkers and nine red checkers are found. Second unfolding reveals a printed black and white checkerboard. Board is packaged in a shippable paper box (2009.31.8B), with space to write a recipient address and return address. Printed with the text "CHECK R BOX," and stamped "Navy."
