Description
Congressional Medal, issued 1873, for the Saving of Life from the Wreck of the Steamer Metis on Long Island Sound, August 31, 1872. Front of medal depicts a man saving a woman from a shipwreck, bringing her into a lifeboat from the water. In the lifeboat are four men. One is standing, pointing, the other three are rowing. In the distance, a tall building with a spire, and two houses are situated on a cliff. The sinking Metis can be seen on the left hand side of medal. On reverse, medal reads "By Resolution of Congress February 24, 1873" around the perimeter. Inside wreath in body of medal reads, "To [blank] for courage and humanity in the saving of life from the wreck of the Steamer Metris on Long Island Sound August 31, 1872".
