Description
Rectangular piece of dark wood, paper label on one side, a two-dimensional eagle on the other side. The eagle has a bundle of arrows in his left claw and a branch in his right claw, a shield rests over the eagle's chest. Wood is split horizontally across the piece. Paper label '35'; large paper label reads "to the memory of Captain (James) Cook. This box is a piece of the ( ) memorable ship Endeavour, which Captain James Cook performed his last cruize [sic] around the world, in the year 1778; who was unfortunately killed by the savages on the island of O()vyhee, as in a narrative of his voyages will more fully appear. And the same box made by Elnathan Manchester, of Newport RI, December 7th, a.d. 1814, and given as a present to Joseph G. Stevens of Newport".
