Set is in the rococo revival style. Body and lid are ornamented with flowers and scrolls, worked in repoussé and chasing. Two cast foliate handles on body, one on lid. Pedestal base with cast scrolled foot rim and four feet. Inscribed: "Presented to Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry by the Chamber of Commerce and Merchants of New York. This set of 15 pieces is part of a dinner service of 381 pieces presented to Commodore Perry by the Chamber of Commerce and Merchants of New York in 1855, in appreciation of his part in opening Japan to trade.
