Description
Set is in rococo revival style. Gravy boats or sauceboats have flowers and scrolls worked in repoussé and chasing, with an engraved horse's head, anchor and inscription "Presented to Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry by the Chamber of Commerce and Merchants of New York." Piece has pedestal base with foot rims with four scrolled feet, and cast handles. This set of 15 pieces is part of a dinner service of 381 pieces presented to Commodore Perry by the Chamber of Commerce and Merchants of New York in 1855, in appreciation of his part in opening Japan to trade.
