Description
Set is in the rococo revival style. Urn is ornamented with flowers and scrolls, worked repoussé and chasing. Urn has two handles in the rustic style with grape and leaf motifs, and a separate lid with finial. Pedestal foot with gadrooned rolled molding. Inscribed: "Presented To Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry, by The Chamber Of Commerce And Merchants Of New York". These 15 pieces are part of a dinner service of 381 pieces presented to Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry by the Chamber Of Commerce And Merchants Of New York in 1855, in appreciation of his part in opening trade to Japan.
