Description
Photograph of "Jack" McGee landing a plane on Easton's Beach in front of a crowd. On August 12, 1912, a young Central Falls flyer made his first solo flight. A few weeks later he was an attraction at Newport Beach giving demonstrations with his short flights. He also "cracked up" when an air pocket caused him to lose control of his aircraft. When he managed to bring it under control and for a forced landing in a field near St. George's School, the landing gear hit a blind ditch. A wing was damaged in what has been documented as the first airplane accident in the state. This photograph is a part of a pair of Newport Daily News photographs which are preserved by the Newport Historical Society.
