Description
Undated copy photograph of Oakland Farm in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. This property was passed through influential families such as the Gibbs, Belmont, and Vanderbilt. The property was purchased in 1886 Cornellius Vanderbilt II (1843-1899). After his death, it passed to his son, Afred "Freddy" Vanderbilt, who made major improvements to the property (1877-1915)."Freddy" was killed by a German U-Boat attack in WWI while traveling aboard the RMSĀ Lusitania. Oakland then passed to his eldest son and remained in the Vanderbilt family until after WWII.
