Photograph of Ida Lewis leaning on a railing and looking away from the camera above the description: "Ida Lewis, The Grace Darling of America. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year of our Lord, 1869, by J.A. Williams, in the Clerk's Office, of the District Court of Rhode Island." Ida Lewis, born February 25, 1842, is best known as the Lime Rock Lighthouse Keeper. From the ages of twelve to sixty-three, she made at least eighteen rescues. In 1969, she became the first woman to be awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal by Congress. Lewis died on October 24, 1911. Gift of Mrs. Alfred L. Carney.
