Siemonsen, representing of Helsinki University in Finland, to Carbon-14 date the lime mortar of the tower. There are two men standing behind him. Members of the Newport City Council, Mayor Robert McKenna, and interested Newport citizens gathered to watch the research efforts. The results of this research, released on September 22, 1993, concluded that the Old Stone Mill was pre-Columbian and likely built in the 17th century, although the 16th century could not be excluded.
