Description
Minutes from a meeting of the African Benevolent Society on January 11, 1811, for the purpose of paying taxes, choosing officers, and considering the proposal to move the annual meeting from April to June. After paying their half year tax, the members heard the President's Address and voted Arthur Flagg, Jr. to prepare an answer. The minutes reference debate surrounding a clause in the address concerning a white male instructor, and the Society nominated Charles Sherman, Pompey Brindley, and Cuffee Lawton to a committee to discern the opinion of all members, if possible. The Society also voted George Fairweather, Newport Phillips, and Thomas Hammond be a committee to thank the Directors and Treasurer for their services in 1810 and ask if they would remain in their offices for 1811. Society then adjourned until January 17.
