Description
Letter sent from William English, Captain of the Brig Ann, updating ship owners Aaron Lopez and Jacob Rivera on his progress to the Gold Coast of West Africa. English relays the loss of some goods (mainly turkeys) in a storm, a trade for some rice, and notes "The lowest price that they ask for slaves here, in our trade is a hundred and fifty barrels whihc is equal to two hundred gallons of rum."; Beginning in late 1772, the Brig Ann undertook the voyage from an unknown port to the Gold Coast of West Africa. While the Captain had not yet engaged in any purchases of enslaved people, that was clearly his purpose as he noted "The lowest price that they ask for slaves here, in our trade is a hundred and fifty barrels which is equal to two hundred gallons of rum."
