Description
Letter of Mary Rotch Huner to husband Charles, July 13, 1862. Reads ".. we sewed on linen pocket handkerchiefs all evening for the wounded of Portsmouth Grove. The surgeon, Dr. Wheaton of Providence, who was in charge neglected the poor fellows to such a degree and was himself always intoxicated that Dr. King and another physician from here have made a representation to the government, Mr. Prescott (minister at Trinity) was there three days doing good. Everybody does something. We give Mr. Prescott or another responsible person money & they give the articles themselves to the soldiers. Newport people have been most liberal and the straingers join - some of the soldiers have worn their shirts more than a month, they had no change of garments and were in a most filthy condition on board the ship...". Mr. Prescott (minister at Trinity Church).
