Description
Detached skirt from what was once a one piece dress with FIC.2018.025 B. Tag "Dress of Miss Gilbert dau. of Capt John Gilbert [...] killed in battle 1756 or 8 see [pedigree])) married Dr. Alexander Johnston. She was the mother of Robert Johnston she of [...] our grandfather. Later she married Dr. Weir." [...] indicated spelling is uncertain or illegible.
All garment construction seams have been removed to create a flat piece of fabric. Pink silk with white stripes. Pieced together from multiple cuts. Two edges have burgandy and white checkered trim 1 1/2 inches wide. Selvages visible in seams. Selvage to selvage is 21 1/2 inches wide. Two rows of trim suggest it was meant to be worn open over a petticoat. Given fitted bodice, the dress was most likely the robe a l'anglaise.
