Description
Cream and purple tiered dress with purple polonaise/train. Made to resemble a mid to late 18th century polonaise. Bodice has low, square neckline, is shaped with princess seams, and comes to point at bottom. Three parallel rows of 1 inch wide velvet ribbon trim bodice, resembling eschelles. Sleeves are short and are trimmed with metallic lace and tulle ruffles resembling engagements. Skirt front gathered in cartridge pleats at waist. Two tiers painted with purple and silver foliate and floral design that include papyrus leafs. Tiers trimmed with 8 in. wide metallic lace. Long purple over skirt with silver tulips in discontinuous brocade. Over skirt trimmed with metallic lace. Knife pleated over skirt sewn to back of tiers in large puff that resembles a polonaise. Remainder of over skirt drapes to ground in a train. Over skirt has weighted hem. Petticoat with white lace trim sewn under tiers. Stiffened unknown material encased in petticoat to mimic panniers, extending the skirt sideways from the hips. Twill ties inside skirt. Mix of hand and machine lock stitch. Fragment of floral trim made from same purple velvet, tulle, and plastic stamen removed from PL front waist line as it was pinned with rusting straight pins. Tremendous bulk around the waist. Side opening on PL 10 inches long and closes with metal hook and eyes. Dress shields under arms serged.
