Institutional Minutes
A copy of a report from the Directors of the African Benevolent Society to the Society for 1809, dated December 13, 1809, and attested by Caleb J. Tenney, Clerk of the Directors. The report focuses on the African Benevolent School. At the end of the previous winter term, the school educated 32 scholars. During the summer, the school hired Mary Davis for six months, and she taught 33 scholars. The Directors report feeling $2 per week wage was insufficient, and so they presented Davis with a Bible and an additional $10. Based on the current state of the school under Arthur Flagg, the Directors expressed hope that the number of students for the upcoming winter would match the previous year. The Directors reminded the Society to thank God for their success. The Directors also made several suggestions regarding the publication of subscription papers, and they encouraged members of the Society to visit the school. Copy of the report attested by Arthur Flagg, Secretary, and received by the Society and recorded on January 20, 1810.
