Voyage of the Charles & Harriot to Montevideo

Event, EV00225

May 29 1805
Voyage
Voyage instructions from Jacob Smith to Captain William Earl directing Earl to take his current cargo over the bar at “Killman,” (present day Quelimane) unless enslaved people are cheaper at Mozambique, and dispose of said cargo and then fill the ship with as many enslaved people as possible, “half Boys and half Girls,” and then sail to Montevideo and meet with Mr. Mario on recommendation of Mr. Halsey. Smith specifies that if no instructions are waiting upon arrival, Earl should sell the enslaved people for specie and then return to Newport with a full cargo of “Jurked Beef & Tallow.” Smith also writes the chief officer is to have a bonus of five enslaved people and the second mate can have one enslaved person.
