Charles E. Hammett Jr. Papers, 1831 – 1907

Historical Note
Charles E. Hammett Jr. was a notable Newport resident who owned and operated a stationery store at 124 Thames Street in the late 19th century. That store also tuned pianos and sewing machines, as stated by a 1867 Newport Directory. Somewhat of a Renaissance man, he was also a publisher. Hammett notably published "Reminiscences of Newport" by George Champlin Mason.
Hammett amassed one of the largest libraries in Newport; the published bibliographies of which are owned by the Historical Society's library collection.
 
Scope and Content
Papers include a book/game deposit from the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institute, high school diploma, bridal gift book of Alfred Lawton Hammett and Lizzie Oxx, 10/04/1875, a deed for land on Thames Street, and stock certificate from the Arctic Ice Co.
