Scope and Content
This collection contains records of Channing Memorial Church dating from its inception in 1835 through to 2011. These include:
  • Meeting minutes, starting from "a Meeting of Gentlemen favorable to the Unitarian views of Doctrine, holden at the house of William Ellery, Esquire, on the evening of Saturday October 24th, 1835..." The minutes document the earliest formation of the Unitarian Congregational Church in Newport, the fundraising and building of the Channing Memorial Church in 1880-1881, establishing the William Ellery Channing monument in Touro Park, and other decisions and meetings of trustees of the church. 
  • Records documenting activities of the church’s Young People’s Unity Club, and later the Unity Club, which sponsored social activities including plays, concerts and lectures, from 1881 through 1912.
  • A handwritten history of the Church from 1835-1880 by Reverend Schermerhorn, a description of Channing Church construction, and a listing of deaths and marriages.
  • Records of 19th century baptisms.
  • Scrapbooks of church history, ephemera relating to events, and clippings.
  • Other materials including church publications, photographs and research files.
