This hand cannon, considered to be one of the forerunners of the modern handgun, is one of the earliest known forms of firearms. Possibly one of the oldest types of small arms, it was widely used in East Asia and later throughout Europe until at least the early 16th century, when it was replaced by more complex firearms like the matchlock.
