Browse

You can browse all manuscript collections by clicking “Collections” in the menu. Clicking “Objects” in the menu allows you to browse all individually cataloged items in the database, including primarily photographs and artifacts, as well as some documents and ephemera.

Basic Search

To conduct a basic search, use the search bar in the top right corner of the page. This performs a search across all fields in both Collection and Object records. Once you perform a basic search, you can choose whether to filter results from Collection or Object records.

Advanced Search

Click the “Advanced Search” link, located under search bar in the top right corner of the page, to search by specific fields, such as People/Organizations, Date, or Material. Here you can choose whether to search Object or Collection records.

Filters and other search features

Narrow your search results by using filters. Select these from the column to the right of your search results.

Sort search results by date, title, or identifier using the sort bar at the top of the results.

Download search results from the gear icon at the top of the results. Results can be downloaded as either an Excel spreadsheet or checklist.

Registering an account and using Lightbox

Click on the account icon in the top right corner of the page to login or register an account and access additional site features:

  • Click on the “COMMENTS AND TAGS” link below the object image to share your knowledge about particular objects by leaving comments, or to help improve search by tagging objects with keywords. Note that all comments and tags will be public and are subject to moderation.
  • Use the Lightbox feature to save sets of objects. Add items to your Lightbox by hovering over the object image and clicking the folder icon, or from the gear icon in search results. Access your Lightbox from the account icon in the top right corner of the page.

Further research

If you have a question about an object, or wish to purchase an image, click “ASK A CURATOR / REQUEST AN IMAGE” under the object image.
